Answer:

SANTIAGO’S HAND GAME WITH THE NEGRO

Santiago often thought of his memories. Among his sweet memories, his hand game with the Negro was a source of consolation and confidence to him. It took place in a tavern in Casablanca. The Negro was considered the strongest man in the area. The contest continued for one day and one night. Santiago sat face to face with the Negro with their elbows on a chalk line on a table. Each one was trying his hardest to force the opponent’s hand down. But at last, at daylight, when the bettors wanted to have the end of the game in a draw, Santiago used all his power in lowering down Negro’s hand on the table. It was a nerve-breaking struggle made by Santiago. Santiago was called “The Champion”. This incident of Santiago’s youth gave him a new zeal, and he felt a new vigour in his old body. This incident was a source of energy for the old man.  The remembrance of this past event lessened his sense of isolation as well as stimulated his failing spirits.                                                                                                                                                      (Words: 177)
