Answer: “The Shadow in the Rose Garden” is an interesting short story by Lawrence. It conveys the message, “Mutual understanding between husband and wife is a must. If any of the couples has an affair before marriage, it must be made clear.”

Mr. Frank was sure that he was not loved by his wife. After they visited a seaside town, his wife suddenly became tense. She sat silently in her bedroom. Frank asked her what the matter was, but she did not reply. After dinner, she went to her bedroom and locked the door. Frank also followed her and asked what the matter was. She couldn’t help digging into her past. Regardless of the consequences, she confessed to her husband that she had been in love with her lover before her marriage. She was informed that he had been killed during fighting in Africa. But during their visit, she was shocked to see that he was alive and had gone mad. Frank got angry, but soon he realized that it was not her wife’s mistake. They began to live better than they had in the past.                                                        (Words: 189)
